![]() There was a lot of somberness on that trip as two of the fatalities were Amtrak dining car cooks who were well known and liked on both trains. So I rode the train all the way to Newton, KS where I grabbed the newspaper to get as much information as I could about the unfolding news of the derailment. I had planned to ride just as far as Fort Worth but with the derailment of the Southwest Limited, the next southbound train would not happen until Oct. In the copy of the paper I bought at the Newton depot, Whitey Herzog had just been fired the night before by the KC Royals, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat asked Reverend Jesse Jackson to carry a special message to the PLO and Amtrak train number 4 had derailed in the early morning dew at Lawrence Kansas. That day down in Texas, I was invited to ride the last fully operational dining car on train # 16, the northbound Lone Star. The Wichita Beacon was full of news on October 02, 1979. ![]()
